Hey, hey, we’re the monkeys!

Toooooo cute! A new client asked me to paint this adorable cartoon monkeys wall mural in the guest room she created for her three little granddaughters.

She had already painted the room with the bright turquoise and lime green found in the bedding and had all kinds of accessories for the room. The girls just loved it already, and she wanted to surprise them with the artwork for their next visit to Grammy’s.

Usually I use a more painterly and impressionistic style in wall murals, so working in cartoon style is a really fun change. A really quick project, the look was accomplished in a day, with just a bit of planning.

Because of the saturated color of the background, I first sketched out the design on the wall and filled the shapes in with a quick drying white primer. This was done so that the turquoise would not muddy up the other colors, and I could get full saturation on the lighter greens and browns. After the primer dried, I brushed on a couple of coats of each color- just like coloring in a coloring book. The black outlines are put on last, with a paint pen. Cheating? Nope. It’s a tool of the trade and gives an even and solid line for a great finish on cartoons.
